Interview of Heba Aly, The New Humanitarian, on Peace & Humanitarian
On 7 February 2020, we held a kick-off event that brought together actors and players from International Geneva. We presented our vision for the media, as well as discuss the five key themes which will be covered daily by our newsroom: Climate, Technology, Sustainable Business and Finance, Peace and Humanitarian, and Global Health. We interviewed thought-leaders to give us their perspective on one of these themes.
Heba Aly is the Director at The New Humanitarian (formerly IRIN News), a media which amplifies the voices of those affected by conflicts and disasters to inform more effective and accountable responses by the international community. She shared her views on how the Peace & Humanitarian sector is covered by the media.
“A few gaps were identified. One was simply covering what’s happening here in Geneva, and helping people who work in Geneva understand what else is going on. Many felt that there’s a lot of activity, reports, and so on, but hard to keep up with who is doing what. So there’s an audience within Geneva for better understanding the developments of peace, humanitarian, migration, and development issues.”
Heba Aly (@hebajournalist) is a multimedia journalist by training, she spent one decade reporting from conflict zones in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia before joining the transition team that led IRIN's spin-off from the United Nations to a non-profit newsroom. Her work has taken her to places like Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Chad and Libya; and she received a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting for her work in northern Sudan. She was named in 2018 one of 100 Young Global Leaders under 40 by the World Economic Forum and the New African Magazine designate her one of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2018.
