Interview of Bruno Jochum, GCSP, on Climate
On 7 February 2020, we held a kick-off event that brought together actors and players from International Geneva. We presented our vision for the media, as well as discuss the five key themes which will be covered daily by our newsroom: Climate, Technology, Sustainable Business and Finance, Peace and Humanitarian, and Global Health. We interviewed thought-leaders to give us their perspective on one of these themes.
Former Director General of the Operational Centre of Médecins sans Frontières Switzerland, Bruno Jochum is currently launching an initiative to accelerate the fight against climate change in middle-sized organizations, particularly in the health, international aid and education sectors. He is a Fellow in residence at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP). He shared his views on how the Climate sector in Geneva is covered by the media.
“[Geneva Solutions] is a great opportunity to really provide information which is much more empowering for people, rather than overwhelming and paralyzing action.”
Bruno Jochum is the co-author of several articles on the subject, notably in the Lancet Countdown on "Climate change and health: an urgent new frontier for humanitarianism" published in November 2018. He has extensive experience in the fields of humanitarian action and international health, crisis and instability situations, as well as expertise in the strategic steering of organizations and local government. He began working in the Horn of Africa in 1993 and during the Rwandan refugee crisis in Goma, and then joined MSF from 2001 to 2018 in various positions of responsibility, as head of mission in Iran, operational head of a region, director of operations, and then Director-General from 2011. During these years, he was also a member of the executive committee of MSF's international movement, a member of the board of Epicentre, the Access Campaign for Essential Medicine and MSF Logistique.
